Financial Help for Septic Repairs and Inspections in Pierce County

Quick answer: TPCHD’s septic financial assistance program isn’t available to every Pierce County homeowner — it requires living within a specific mapped eligible area (including Key Peninsula, Lake Tapps, Spanaway Lake, and several watershed basins) and having a household income at or below 80% of Area Median Income. If you qualify, you can get discounts on routine inspections, pumping, riser installation, and minor repairs. Separate loan and grant programs exist for homeowners outside the mapped area too.

Who Actually Qualifies

This is the detail most guides skip: qualifying isn’t just about income. TPCHD’s financial assistance program is tied to a specific eligibility map covering areas including Alderton Creek, Key Peninsula, Lake Tapps, Lynch Creek, Minter Bay, North Fork, Ohop Creek, Salmon Creek, South Prairie Creek Tributary, Spanaway Lake, Spiketon Ditch, and Swan Creek. Your household income also needs to be at or below 80% of Area Median Income (AMI). Both conditions apply — meeting only one doesn’t qualify you for this specific program, though other options may still be available (see below).

What the Discounts Actually Cover

• $125 off a routine inspection (required first, before other discounts apply)
• $125 toward riser installation
• $200 off tank pumping
• $500 off qualifying minor repairs — repairs that don’t require an installation permit, like replacing a malfunctioning part, reducing drainfield clogging, or adding a secondary access device

Important: this program is specifically for routine inspections. It does not apply to inspections required for a home sale (RSS).

How to Apply

Contact TPCHD at OMFA@tpchd.org or (253) 649-1421 to request the financial assistance form. TPCHD verifies your eligibility before service begins — both a Health Department official and the homeowner sign off on the form. Once approved, choose a certified septic service provider from the list included with your form (TPCHD recommends comparing at least a few companies), schedule your service, and give the provider your approved form at the time of service. The discount is applied directly on your invoice.
